I bought some castella at castella specialty shop “DE CARNERO CASTE Ashiya”, which opened on March 20 near Hankyu Ashiyagawa Station, along the Ashiyagawa River〜

Two kinds of castella from “DE CARNERO CASTE Ashiya”

Left: “Plain Castella (1 slice)” 351 yen (tax included)

Right: “Spice Castella (1 slice)” 378 yen (tax included)

↑ The plain one was stamped with a sheep and the shop logo, while the spice one had a dog stamped on it〜 So cute!

The stamps don’t differ by flavor; each piece has a different branding mark, so it’s fun to choose one〜(but it’s hard to decide〜!)

↑ The plain one is a simple castella where you can really taste the flavor of egg and honey!

↑ It has a soft and springy texture, and feels like the kind of snack you can enjoy with total comfort〜

↑ There’s plenty of zarame coarse sugar on the bottom too!

↑ The spice castella contains seven kinds of spices: cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, and timut pepper. It also has black tea leaves, so it tastes almost like chai!

↑ The fluffy, chewy batter is packed with spices and tea leaves, giving it a fun texture too! It also contains rum, so this might be a pretty grown-up castella〜

↑ The bottom has cacao nibs, and the bitterness and texture are kind of addictive〜. Recommended for people who like something a little more adventurous than the basic flavors!

↑ Besides the ones introduced above, they were also selling flavored castella such as chocolate, matcha with red bean paste, and coffee, as well as round Taiwanese castella, castella for dogs, castella rusks, tuile cookies, and more〜

↑ The shop has opened on the first floor of a building along the Ashiyagawa River, recognizable by its red brick-style exterior walls. It’s where the toy shop “Signa Collection Ashiyagawa” used to be before closing on 1/12.

↑ Inside the shop, they were also selling beautifully designed boxed castella, as well as children’s toys, jams, syrups, and more〜

↑ It looks like the cafe space, which wasn’t open right after the shop first launched, is now open too! In addition to castella, you can apparently enjoy mini parfaits made with castella and seasonal drinks〜
