Near Hanshin Uchide Station, barrier-free renovation work is currently underway on the Wakamiya Pedestrian Bridge over National Route 43.

The address is between Wakamiya-cho 5 and Hama-cho 2 in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.
Wakamiya Pedestrian Bridge before barrier-free upgrades (elevator installation)
↑ It’s already an easy-to-climb pedestrian bridge with a gentle ramp, but it looks like it will become even more convenient once an elevator is installed.
↑ They’re not very noticeable, but there are also stairs on the west side.
↑ The bridge passes underneath the expressway (Hanshin Expressway Route 3 Kobe Line). It’s interesting how the expressway is slightly cut away just above the pedestrian bridge.
↑ Just to the east, there is a traffic light and a pedestrian crossing. Many cyclists and people who are comfortable walking probably cross at street level. On the other hand, the people who would actively want to use the pedestrian bridge are likely those with physical disabilities or those worried about making it across before the light changes, so making it barrier-free is important!
↑ If you look closely at the pedestrian bridge before construction, you can see rust in some areas… It would be reassuring if those parts get cleaned up as part of the renovation work!
In closing
On National Route 43, the “Ashiya Pedestrian Bridge” near Ashiya City Hall has already been made barrier-free and fitted with an elevator. We’re looking forward to this becoming a pedestrian bridge that wheelchair and stroller users, as well as people with physical disabilities, can use more safely and comfortably!
