Ashiya City’s routine influenza vaccination program for seniors aged 65 and over will apparently begin tomorrow, Thursday, September 24, one week earlier than usual this year.

The program is starting early because this year’s flu season has begun earlier than usual. Since the vaccine takes about two weeks to become effective and provides protection for around five months, the city recommends getting vaccinated before flu activity reaches its peak.
Here are the key points:
- During September, vaccinations are available only to Ashiya residents receiving them at participating medical institutions within Ashiya City. Those using medical institutions outside the city and people who live outside Ashiya are not eligible until Thursday, October 1, as usual.
- The vaccination period runs from Thursday, September 24, 2026, through Sunday, January 31, 2027.
- Eligible recipients must be registered residents of Ashiya City and aged 65 or over on the day of vaccination. People aged 60–64 with certain disabilities are also eligible.
- The out-of-pocket cost is ¥1,500.
- Vaccine delivery dates vary by medical institution, so call ahead to check availability before visiting.
Posters and notices already distributed may show “October 1,” but the city asks residents to read this as “September 24.”

In Closing
With flu season arriving earlier than usual, it’s understandably concerning, especially for seniors. Getting vaccinated early may offer some peace of mind.
