It looks like this year’s Ashiya Summer Carnival will feature size-5 fireworks shells! That’s an upgrade from the size-4 shells, which had long been the largest used at the event.

According to the official Instagram account, the aim is to create “bigger, closer, and even more moving fireworks.” Apparently, this ambitious upgrade was made possible thanks to the tremendous support the event received last year.
Viewed from the beach, you’ll be able to enjoy huge fireworks blooming almost directly overhead—so high above you that your neck might start to ache from looking up!
How different are size-4 and size-5 fireworks shells?
Based on information from various fireworks websites:
- Size-4 shell: Firework diameter of around 120–130m / launch height of approximately 160m
- Size-5 shell: Firework diameter of around 150–170m / launch height of approximately 190m
That’s roughly how much they differ.
The difference in diameter can be as much as approximately 50m. If the fireworks are about two 25m swimming pools wider, they should feel considerably more powerful in person!
They’ll also be launched higher, so you may find yourself looking up more than ever at the venue. They may also be easier to see from homes and parks farther away.
