The Yodoko Guest House (Former Yamamura Residence) was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1924. The main building has been designated a National Important Cultural Property since May 1974.
Of the four surviving Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in Japan, this is the only residence that still retains its original appearance! That makes it an exceptionally valuable building.

An on-site survey conducted between January and September 2023 reportedly uncovered remains of structures and features that once stood there, including a greenhouse, covered walkway, and pond.
Because the site makes use of its sloping terrain, the entire grounds—not just the building—are considered important for understanding Wright’s architecture in harmony with nature. That’s why the whole property is apparently being added to the designation!
