Tomorrow, November 5, it looks like everyone’s mobile phones will ring at once, even if they’re set to silent mode.
Here ↓
The sound is “so-re-so-shi-re”
Here’s a sample of what it sounds like ↓
It will ring at 10:02
10:00: There will be a broadcast over the city’s disaster prevention administrative radio system (outdoor speakers) at 45 locations, as well as emergency alert radios.
10:02: Area Mail alerts will ring all at once on mobile phones. They will ring even if your phone is set to silent mode.
Ashiya City’s page says they would like people to check whether they can take the following actions during the drill.
The Nishinomiya version of the emergency alert radio is 75% off
The emergency alert radio that will sound at 10:00 is sold in both Ashiya and Nishinomiya models, but the Nishinomiya model is by far cheaper. The Ashiya one is 8,800 yen, while the Nishinomiya one is 2,200 yen.
Apparently the Nishinomiya version is so cheap because Nishinomiya City subsidizes it.
However, people registered in Ashiya City’s registry for those requiring assistance during emergencies and disasters can buy one for 1,000 yen, which is even cheaper than the Nishinomiya version.
Final Note
Since everyone’s phones will suddenly ring at the same time, it might cause a moment of panic if you’re on the train or in a crowded place. Stay calm and check the Area Mail alert. It might also be a good idea to let people you know that it will ring tomorrow at 10:00.
