Part of the seawall renovation work being carried out in Minami-Ashiyahama as a storm surge countermeasure has been completed, and Shio-Ashiya Beach is now accessible again.
Following the flooding damage caused by Typhoon No. 21, which struck the Kinki region in September 2018, Hyogo Prefecture has been raising the height of the south seawall and beach seawall as a storm surge countermeasure.
The work was originally scheduled to be completed on August 31 of last year, but it seems the beach ultimately reopened on April 13 of this year.
A wave-return inner wall has been installed behind the beach, making it more resistant to storm surges.
The beach is now open, but the seawall renovation work has not been fully completed, and there are still off-limits areas nearby.
Fishing is still not allowed along the south seawall. It appears the area will remain off-limits until around the end of June.
Even the reopened beach area is closed at night, from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., and entry is prohibited during those hours.
